Broad Street Independent Chapel, Reading.
It is so easy to walk down a shopping street and not notice the clues to times gone by. Modern shopfronts frequently hide a building’s past. But, look above the facia, and the can be a giveaway.
This one is not difficult to spot. Above the arch, carved out in the stonework are the words “Broad Street Independent Chapel“. The date 1892 is also visible.
However, this belies the age of the original chapel, as this is a “modern” frontage! In fact, the chapel dates back to 1707. The original part remains behind the later addition, and is still in use by Waterstones.
Street furniture and trees make this difficult to photograph, particularly with the sun at an awkward angle. Only having my phone with me, today’s photograph is a snap to capture this piece of Reading’s history.
