Lysaght Tower, Wolverhampton.
I wasn’t planning to get a photograph on this afternoon’s walk. Moral of the story, always take your camera with you! Looking for somewhere different to walk the dog, we discovered East Park in Wolverhampton. What a stunning park this is. Dating back to 1896, it utilises land reclaimed from mining. Subsidence subsequently reclaimed the boating lake, but the rest, including the Lysaght Tower, remain making this an excellent recreational area. The tower was built in 1895, whilst the park itself was under construction. It is now Grade II listed. It was erected by employees of the Swan Garden and Osier Bed Ironworks. These had been two separate industries in the area, and were bought by Irishman John Lysaght in 1878 and 1880 respectively. After many years of growth, decline gradually set in and, after a number of different owners, the inevitable happened in 2009.
