Oldbury Locks Junction.
This is still a continuing theme. Moving outside of Birmingham City Centre, the Old Main Line criss-crossed its successor a number of times. Three loops survive. Traces of others can be seen. However, at Smethwick the situation changes. The New Main Line continues defiantly on its straight line. The Old Main Line turns off to the north but then runs parallel for a while after climbing up three locks, before crossing over the New Line underneath the M5. It continues for some way under the Motorway. At Oldbury Locks Junction another branch heads up towards what is known as the Titford Pools.
This is a fascinating section of canal, made more interesting because of the roadworks that have been going on for the last two years. This has caused the motorway to be shrouded in scaffolding, polythene sheeting – and to be very well lit, making it a great subject for night-time photography.
