Robin Bibi plays Guitar.
Today was the first ever Newbury Jazz and Blues Festival. On the main stage this evening was the Robin Bibi Blues Band.
It was a free, outdoor concert. It was easy to get right up to the stage. By using the 70-200 zoom, I could close in as much as I wanted. With maximum aperture (F2.8), I got a short depth of field to add drama.
Making sure I had Robin Bibi’s face in focus creates a strong image. It was further enhanced by the fact that he just happened to be looking more or less in my direction at the time.
He stands out well against the blurred background. The light was beginning to fade, so the stage spots also lift the musician from his surroundings.
The guitar being partially in focus (by virtue of the fact that it is on both sides of the plane of focus) adds life to the shot. The fast shutter speed freezes the movement, but the slight blur on the hands creates the illusion of motion.
