The Silver Birch.
Today I was walking into town. The weather was very grey and damp. Taking a detour through a park, the sheer beauty of this Silver Birch Tree just shone out. I knew it had to be today’s photograph. The patterns are just amazing. It almost looks like layers of wallpaper which have been partially stripped off. The silver contrasting with the rather more yellowy sections, knots and mouldy green patches.
I didn’t feel it necessary to get the whole tree in. Better, I felt, to get in close and take a more abstract shot. Get the trunk to fill a significant part of the frame.
Being close to the tree, it doesn’t need a particularly large aperture to blur the background. With the silver birch tree nicely in focus, this makes it stand out all the more.
